How do I know if therapy is right for me?
If something has been weighing on you, repeating in your relationships, or getting in the way of the life you want, therapy is worth considering. You do not need to be in crisis to benefit. Sending a short email is a low-pressure way to ask questions and explore whether it makes sense right now.
How do I know if we are a good fit?
Research consistently shows that the relationship between client and therapist is one of the strongest predictors of good outcomes. Pay attention to whether you feel heard and respected. If we are not the right fit, I am happy to help you find someone who is.
Do you work with children and teens?
Yes. I work with children and adolescents, usually alongside their parents or caregivers. A parent or legal guardian needs to consent to treatment for clients under 18, and if parents are separated or divorced, I ask for a copy of the current custody order. I will talk with you and your child at the start about how privacy works in therapy with young people.
How long does therapy take?
It depends on your goals. Some people come for a focused period of a few months around a specific concern; others find value in longer-term work. We will check in regularly about how things are going and what you need.
Is what I share confidential?
Yes, with a few exceptions required by law. These include situations where there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or others, suspected abuse or neglect of a child or vulnerable adult, or a court order. I will review confidentiality and its limits with you in our first session.
Do you offer telehealth?
Yes. Secure video sessions are available for clients who are physically located in Virginia at the time of the session.
Do you take insurance?
I do not accept or bill insurance, but I can provide a superbill you can submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Please see Fees & Insurance for details.
Can you prescribe medication?
No. As a Licensed Professional Counselor I do not prescribe medication. If medication might be helpful, I am glad to coordinate with your primary care provider or refer you to a psychiatric provider.
Do you provide substance use evaluations?
Do you provide expert witness services?
Yes. I have been qualified as an expert witness in Virginia courts in child development, attachment and trauma, foster care and adoption, family reunification, and substance use disorders. See Expert Witness & Legal Consultation and my CV.
